Onyx, Cipactli, and Oracle Event at Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Charter School

March 19, 2013 | By |

On Friday November 2, 2012, Onyx, Cipactli, and Oracle–the three ethnic honor societies on campus–collaborated to learn more about what public education looks like on the ground level in West Philadelphia. Boys Latin Charter School kindly welcomed us to tour their school so that we could meet their students, help them with their coursework, and encourage them to strive for success as noted by each of our society’s pillars! This was a great way for the three ethnic honor societies at Penn to come together and communicate with the community that surrounds us. Humanity! [via]

Tutoring with Refugee Education Partners

April 5, 2011 | By |

On April 2, Oracle members volunteered with a weekly tutoring program for Burmese Karen refugee children who have been relocated to South Philadelphia. The program is coordinated by Refugee Education Partners, a joint effort between community members and the US Campaign for Burma’s Philadelphia Chapter. We appreciated being part of an incredible opportunity to support a segment of the APA community that is marginalized and often forgotten. Hopefully we will continue giving back through Refugee Education Partners next year and beyond!

Oracle at the Pride Games

March 27, 2011 | By |

On March 27, Oracle competed in the 5th annual Pride Games, a field day competition held annually by Penn Athletes and Allies Tackling Homophobia (PATH). While we didn’t bring home a trophy, everyone had a great time speed-eating Jimmy John’s sandwiches, chugging lime water, drag racing, and of course tackling homophobia.

Oracle Supports Japan Relief Efforts

March 27, 2011 | By |

The devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan brought many students together to support relief efforts. Over the past two weeks, Oracle worked closely with several other groups to organize events for the entire Penn community.

On Friday, March 18, Oracle worked with the Japan Student Association and 4 other senior societies (Friars, Mortar Board, Onyx, and Sphinx) to organize a paper crane-folding event by the Compass on Locust Walk. Our goal was to help build a campus-wide message of hope.

On Thursday, March 24, we commemorated the two-week anniversary of the earthquake with a Japan Relief Benefit dinner to keep the victims of the devastation in our hearts and minds and also raise money for the Penn Japan Relief Fund. The event was a collaboration with the Asian Pacific Student Coalition, the Japan Student Association, and Lambda Phi Epsilon. Read the DP’s coverage of the event here.
